Dr. Chris E. Juhl, actively and successfully engaged in the practice of veterinary surgery in Osage and Mitchell county, was born in Lee county, Iowa, in 1880. His father, Gregers Juhl, was born in Denmark in 1850 and came to the United States in 1868, establishing his home in Lee county, Iowa, near Keokuk, where he followed the occupation of farming. In 1887 he removed to Emmet county, Iowa, where he has since lived. He married Dorothy Thompson, also a native of Denmark, whose death occurred about 1911. They were the parents of eight children, namely: Eric, who is a resident of Emmet county; Thomas, who died at the age of four years; Chris E., of this review; Thomas and Andrew, who are residents of Emmet county, where they follow farming; Lewis, who is a farmer of Goldfield, Iowa; John, who carries on general agricultural pursuits in Emmet county; and Marie, who passed away.
Six of the number are still living, but Dr. Juhl is the only one who resides in Mitchell county. He acquired his early education in the schools of Emmet county, and afterward had academic instruction in Drake University at Des Moines. In 1909 he became a student in Ames College, where he pursued a course in veterinary surgery, which he completed by graduation with the class of 1913. He then came to Osage, where he established his practice and has since remained. He has been very successful in his profession and his practice now covers the greater part of Mitchell county. He has secured the most modern apparatus and equipment tor professional work and is looked upon as the leading veterinarian of Osage. He is also interested in cattle grazing, keeping a small herd. Before entering the veterinary profession he remained upon the home farm until he reached the age of twenty-one years, and afterward was employed as a farm hand and later followed farming independently for five years, or until 1908, his attention being devoted to general farming in Emmet county. In connection with his brother he also had a threshing outfit, which they operated together through nine seasons, but the practice of veterinary surgery attracted him and, thoroughly qualifying for his chosen life work, Dr. Juhl has since made steady progress along that line. He opened his office in Osage on the 3d of May, 1913, and during the intervening period, covering four and a half years, he has won a very large practice.
On the 22d of January, 1913, Dr. Juhl was united in marriage to Miss Maud E. Richards, who was born near Ferris, in Hancock county, Illinois, August 19, 1882, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Richards, the former for many years a farmer of Illinois, where he conducted a creamery business, now living on a farm near Nashua, Iowa. Mrs. Juhl was one of ten children, eight of whom are living. To Dr. and Mrs. Juhl was born a son, Richard Charles, on October 21, 1917, who, however, passed away on the next day. Dr. and Mrs. Juhl hold membership in the Methodist church and in politics he is an independent republican, usually supporting the principles of the party, yet not considering himself bound by party ties. He enjoys his professional work, is deeply interested in it from a scientific standpoint and keeps abreast with all of the latest discoveries and researches, his efforts being attended with splendid success.
