The earliest generation of Hatfield's in Mitchell County, Iowa was Clark Hatfield, his wife, Sophira (Simpson) Hatfield, and their two young daughters, Ann Louisa and Emily Jane. Clark was born January 16, 1812 at Bridgewater, Oneida, County, New York, the oldest of 12 children.

Soon after Clark's birth, his family immigrated first to Wethersfield, Genesee County (now Wyoming County), New York. On January 16, 1834, Clark married Sophira Stimson, daughter of Jeremy and Betsy Stimson, early pioneers in Chickasaw County, Iowa.

Clark and his family came to Mitchell Co. from Cattaraugus County, New York, in the early 1840's and on March 13, 1845, their only son, Franklin Jay, was born. Within a few years, Clark's parents, his brothers: Nathan, Eli, Perkins, William and Mason, and sisters: Mary, Caroline, and Cynthia, migrated to Clinton County, Iowa, The five younger siblings later married and were early settlers in Quincy, Olmsted County, Minnesota.

Clark and Sophira face many hardships as did most pioneers of their time, but armed with faith and love, and in complete harmony with each other, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. This eventful day was celebrated with a reception in their honor with more than 75 guests at their home in Osage. Clark and Sophira lived to celebrate their 60th wedded year.

Their earthly life came to a close in 1895; Sophira on February 21, and Clark on October 19, 1895 -- and they are buried at the Osage City Cemetery.

Their oldest daughter, Ann Louisa, married Harmon Cole and two sons were born to this union, Arthur J. and Myron C. Ann Louisa died at Osage on November 8, 1916. Her sister, Emily Jane, married Oliver L. Cole and she died on May 18, 1917 at Osage, without issue. Franklin Jay married Eleanor Charlotte Fisk at New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa, on May 6, 1872. Eleanor Charlotte was born at Farmersville, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1850, daughter of James G. and Mary (Stimson) Fisk, early settlers in Chickasaw County. Franklin Jay and Eleanor Charlotte had four children, all born in Mitchell County: (1) Maud Ethel, born February 9, 1874; married George Rufus Scammon on October 11, 1904 in Red Wing, Minnesota. The Scammons farmed and ranched in eastern Montana where they had four children: Gordon, Joseph Gerald, Hazel Lois, and Orin. Maud died August 20, 1953 at Billings, Montana. (2) Guy Newton was born September 9, 1876 and married Julia Adeline Lugg on January 29, 1894 at New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa. Julia was born at Burr Oak on December 22, 1871, daughter of A. B. Lugg. They had five children: Grace, Jay M., Inez, Erma, and Guy Leroy. Guy Newton died at Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, on April 17, 1910 and is buried at Osage. (3) Earl Franklin and Pearl (his twin sister), were born on January 21, 1879 at David.

In the early 1880s, Franklin Jay and his family moved to Sterling Township, Polk County, Wisconsin, where Eleanor Charlotte died on May 7, 1886 at age 36. Franklin Jay returned to Osage with his family where he died less than two years later on January 3, 1888, leaving his young family orphaned. Since the twins, Earl Franklin and Pearl, were only nine years old they were legally adopted by their Aunt Emily Jane (Hatfield) Cole and her husband, but retain the Hatfield surname. Pearl married Rufus J. Cole, of Olmsted County, Minnesota, on October 1, 1902 at Osage. They had two sons: Earl and John, and resided in St. Petersburg, Florida.
