MILLS COUNTY TRIBUNE
DATED SEPTEMBER 2, 1915:

“Hello Jack” were the last words uttered by Sheriff E. W. Bushnell when death overtook him on Tuesday morning about nine o’clock. He had been around town as usual and had just come from his home two blocks away. He usually stopped to see the men at work on the jail building. He always admired the skill shown by the workman, Jack Farris, and on this morning went up on the scaffold where the workman was engaged on the north side. Two other workmen, Robt. Johnson and Henry Stevens, were also present. Sheriff Bushnell greeted the man, as mentioned in the opening sentence, and in an instant, fell on the scaffolding. His head struck a piece of brick, cutting a gash above his right eye, and he died without a word or a moan.

The news spread fast and soon two physicians were on hand, but their skill was of no avail. They gave as their opinion that death was due to apoplexy.

The body was taken to the Bushnell home and word was sent to the two married daughters living at Malvern --- Mrs. Dr. Rush and Mrs. L. A. Talbott. Another daughter, Mrs. Robert Ranne, of Tacoma, Wash., was notified by telegraph. Two other daughters --- Edith and Ruth --- are at home.

Mr. Bushnell was serving his third term as sheriff of Mills County, and was a popular official. A little over two months ago, when the workmen were ready to begin on the new jail and sheriff’s residence the official residence was moved to the Gigray house on Walnut street.

The body of Mr. Bushnell was taken Tuesday evening on No. 14 to Malvern and lies in state at the home of his son-in-law, Dr. W. A. Rush.

It has been decided to hold the funeral of Sheriff Bushnell on Sunday September 5, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Stevenson of the Glenwood M. E. church will preach the funeral sermon.
