Mrs. J. E. Cheyney

In the deaths during the past week in our county there has seemed an unusual number of wives, every one of whom has left one or more children and those children in nearly every case are young.

The taking of these mothers at a time when their children so much need mother love and guidance, gives us pause, as to the ways of an inscrutable Providence.

As we run through our mind, the past month, we find that nearly thirty young children, of this county, are left motherless. The mystery is, that if Providence does all things wisely and well, why not the acts of Providence be made a little clearer to our finite minds?

In the death of Mrs. John E. Cheyney Glenwood vicinity has lost a splendid wife and mother. Just as she began to see a part of her beloved ones stepping from the bounds of childhood, the summons came.

The husband and children may well cherish the memory of her who did all in her power to enrich the lives of those near and dear to her.

The following obituary is a brief statement of the events of her life.

Cecilia C. Richards, daughter of Milton Richards and the late Caroline Walling, was born in Glenwood December 29, 1874. On November 30, 1900, she was united in marriage with John E. Cheyney. To this union eight children were born, of whom two died in infancy. Those living are Thornton, Milton, Edith, John Jr., James and Woodrow, the eldest being 17 and the youngest 6 years old. Besides the children she leaves her husband and her aged father who makes his home with them, one sister, Mrs. Josephine McCoy of Glenwood, one brother, Thornton Richards of Sterling, Colorado. Mrs. Cheyney was a cripple most of her life.

Most of her life she was an invalid and yet her affliction never brought a murmur of impatience. When the family became ill of the flu she bravely kept up until all were nearly well and then she yielded to the disease.

She entered peacefully into her rest at 7 P.M. January 7, at her home, "Saint's Rest" farm near Glenwood. Funeral services were conducted by her cousin, Elder Hougas of the Latter Day Saints church, Henderson, Iowa. Burial took place in the Glenwood Cemetery at 2 p.m. January 9th. Card of Thanks: We wish to thank those who so kindly loyally stood by us and gave their services during this, our saddest and greatest bereavement. We also wish to thank those who sent beautiful floral offerings. -- John E. Cheyney and children Milton Richards, and Mrs. William McCoy.
