Robert 'Bob' Forney, 80, Tabor

Robert "Bob" Carroll Forney, 80, of Tabor died July 9, 2005, at the Tabor Manor. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 10:30 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary in Glenwood. Burial will be at the Tabor Cemetery.

Mr. Forney was born Dec. 16, 1924, to Lester Leroy Forney and Dorothy June Forney in Thurman. Most of his grade school years were spent at the Dutch Hollow School. From there, he attended Thurman High School and graduated in 1942. After graduation, Mr. Forney enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in a tank destroyer unit. During his stay in the army he earned four battle stars for overseas combat. After his discharge, he enrolled in Creighton University.

In 1948, Mr. Forney married Janice Cargill. From this union, two children were born, Diana Lea Forney and Rodney Carroll Forney. After graduating from Creighton in 1950 Mr. Forney taught school in Thurman for two years, Elliott for three years and Glenwood until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Forney greatly enjoyed his years with the Glenwood band and still enjoyed visiting with his past band members. After 11 years, Mr. Forney returned to Creighton and earned a master's degree in guidance counseling. He continued to work as a middle school guidance counselor until his retirement. Mr. Forney enjoyed pitching horseshoes, playing for dances and bowling. In their later years, Mr. Forney and his wife enjoyed relation on their farm north of Thurman.

Mr. Forney's health required him to move into the Tabor Manor in June 2005.

Mr. Forney was preceded in death by his son, Rodney; daughter, Diana Lea; parents; brother Ansel Forney and wife Merna; and sister, Dorothy Vanatta. Mr. Forney is survived by his wife, Janice; brother, Bernon Forney; and several other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Glenwood Fire and Rescue unit and the Mary Jane Miller Scholarship Fund at Glenwood Community High School.
