George Winters, 72, Malvern

George Francis Leroy Winters, 72, died July 4, 2005 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. Services were held July 7 at Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern. Reverend Steve Frazee officiated.

Mr. Winters was born Nov. 30, 1932 the youngest of three children to Roy and Ona Gayle (Edie Winters, on a farm in Mongomery County near Emerson. The family moved to Malvern in 1943. In 1955, Chantry Elementary School opened across the street from the Winters' home and Mr. Winters was a friendly neighbor to the school. The students were fascinated by his odd looking Allis Chalmers Model G tractor he drove at their home. Mr. Winters attended the Malvern First Baptist Church and churches in a various communities in which he would later live. His daily routine included an 11-block walk to the Malvern post office during which he enjoyed long visits with friends and townspeople. In later years, a favorite spot of his was the ice cream shop in Malvern. Mr. Winters continued to live with his parents until their deaths. He moved to Florida to live with his sister Darlene Shapcott and her husband Duane. They and Mr. Winters later moved to Glenwood where he joined the First Baptist Church. Mr. Winters moved to a group home in Red Oak and later Malvern where he quickly became reunited with the townspeople and resumed his daily walks. In Feb. of 2004 Mr. Winters moved to the Midland's Living Center in Council Bluffs.

Mr. Winters was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Darlene Shapcott; brother-in-law, Paul Durham, Duane Shapcott and Leland Jensen. He is survived by his sister, Nadine (Durham) Jensen; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
