Funeral Services for John Edie

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Methodist church for John Edie, who died suddenly at his home in Hastings Friday evening.

John Andrew Edie was born Aug. 15, 1855, being 86 years, six months and 12 days of age when he died. He was born in Peoria county, Ill., coming to Mills county with his parents when but five months old. He was a son of A.G. and Sarah Edie. His parents homesteaded three miles west and south of Emerson. He lived there until he was married Oct. 24, 1880, to Elizabeth Carey, then establishing a home on the farm adjoining his parents. He spent all of his life in Mills county except for four years he lived in Nance county, Neb. Six years ago, too old to continue on the farm, he moved to Hastings.

Mr. Edie was active in community affairs and loyal to his country, watching five of his grandsons depart for service in the defense of the nation. He had remained in strong physical condition and boasted of having grown eight of his third set of teeth and having almost perfect sight.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Elizabeth, and eight children, Andrew, Charles and Ephraim Edie, all of Emerson, Mrs. Nettie James of Sioux City, O.F. Edie of Hastings, Mrs. Bonnie Rice of Tabor, Mrs. Gladys Winger of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Norma Turner of Glenwood; three sisters, Minerva and Jennie of Los Angeles and Belle of Lyons, Neb.; two brothers, Harvey of Marceline, Mo., and Scott of Emerson; 53 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. One son, Albert and a daughter, Eula preceded him in death.

He was a dutiful husband, a kind father and a good neighbor wherever he lived and will be missed by all who knew him.

Rev. B.N. Eshelman was in charge of the services and six grandsons acted as pallbearers.
