Capt. R.E. Humphrey Passed Away Sunday

Captain R.E. Humphrey, Spanish-American war veteran, passed away Sunday in the Veteran's hospital in Knoxville, where he had been a patient for the past six years. The immediate cause of his death was due to pneumonia which resulted from the shock of a recent fall in which he sustained a fractured hip. The body will be brought to the old family home at Elliot where funeral services will be held and burial made Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. Humphrey was, for many years, a prominent figure in this community. He was serving as county auditor and active in the national guard prior to the outbreak of the first world war. As commander, he took the company to the border in 1916 and was retired only by reason of his age when the company was reorganized for overseas service.

He was a pharmacist by profession and was for many years a member of the drug firm of Humphrey and Howe in this city. He took an active interest in civic affairs of all kinds, serving for some time as president of the board of education.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter and three sons.
