Emer Elworth Hatcher, son of David and Wilma Hatcher, was born in Glenwood, Iowa on Feb. 10, 1898, and died at his home in Glenwood Saturday, July 8, 1967, at the age of 69 years, four months and 28 days.

Practically all of his life was spent in the Glenwood community. He received his education and grew to young manhood here. On June 3, 1918, he enlisted in the United States Army serving his country during World War 1 until July 25, 1919, when he was honorably discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa. In the years that followed he was a member of Glenwood’s Company I, 168th Infantry Regiment, where he attained the rank of sergeant.

On July 16, 1922, he was united in marriage with Iva Viola Wethy and they soon would have been married 45 years. In this union were born four children; Orville K. Hatcher of Omaha, Mrs. Leona J. Allen of Baton Rouge, La., Miss Betty E. Hatcher of Omaha and Mrs. Barbara J. Patterson at Wilmington, Cal.

A man of many talents he was employed as a mason, carpenter, butter-maker, custodian at Glenwood High School and at the Roth Packing Plant. Six years ago he retired from the packing plant due to failing health. He spent much time as a patient at various Veterans hospitals.

He served on the Glenwood city council, was a member of the American Legion, an officer of Glenwood Lodge 97, IOOF, for some 44 years and a participant in the activities of Rebekah Lodge No. 552. He was a member of Glenwood’s First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his widow, Iva, of Glenwood; a son, Orville K. Hatcher of Omaha; three daughters, Mrs. Leona J. Allen of Baton Rouge, La., Miss Betty E. Hatcher of Omaha and Mrs. Barbara J. Patterson of Wilmington, Calif.; nine grandchildren Jeanene, Candace, David and Daniel Hatcher, all of Omaha, Susan and Douglas Allen of Baton Rouge, La., and Bruce, Brenda, and Karen Patterson of Wilmington, Calif.; two brothers, Joy Hatcher of Pittsburg , Pa., and Floyd Hatcher of Arcadia , Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Speck of Calif., and Mrs. Florence Brower of Glenwood.

Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur C. Marston officiating. Organist was Mrs. Mildred Wamberg , and soloist was Neil McPherron.

Flower ladies were Erma Ross, Pauline Bomer, Ethel Williams and Edith Clark. Ushers were Ronald Hurst, Truman Chambers and Maro Craig.

Pallbearers were Fred Kuhl Sr., Edgar Hughes, Wayne Bomer, Lonnie Ross, Bill Bartelson and Norris Clark. Honorary bearers were Robert Pollitt, A.G. Williams, Al Mumea, Fred Kuhl Jr., and Ben Stille. Burial was at Glenwood cemetery.
