Malvern Leader
April 30, 1908

This week we chronicle the passing of another old time Mills County resident, George Thiel, well known to all the older residents of the southeast part of the county where he had made his home for so many years. Mr. Thiel was an exemplary citizen and until old age overtook him always active in his work and in his interest in the welfare of his family and community. We knew him as a kind friend, a good neighbor and a fond parent who will be greatly missed after his fruitful life of more than the allotted time.

George Thiel was born in Germany, April 6, 1828. He came to America at the age of 25 years and has ever since made this his home. In 1853 he was married to Mrs. Lavina Simpkins’ at Maquon, Ill. To them were born six children of whom five survive; J.W. and Emory of Minnesota, G.N. of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Mary McFarland, of Newman Grove, Nebr., and Mrs. H.E. Boyer of Malvern. Mrs. Lydia Simpkins the eldest died two years ago.

They came to Jones County, Iowa and then in 1866 came to Mills County locating in Deer Creek township near Strahan where they reared their family and passed the greater part of their life.

Three years ago they went to Nebraska to make their home with a son and here the beloved wife passed away June 1907. Three weeks ago he returned to this county to make his home with his daughter Mrs. Boyer and a week later was stricken with paralysis from which he never recovered and passed to his reward on the evening of April 28.

Many years ago he was converted and united with the United Brethren church, at South Grove and was later transferred to the M.E. church at Strahan of which he was a member at the time of his death.

Brief funeral services were held at the residence of H.E. Boyer Wednesday afternoon and the remains were taken to Newman Grove, Nebr. To be interred by the aide of his wife.
