Mills County Tribune
August 21, 1916Mrs. Bertha Baxter
Few things have caused more sincere sorrow in Hastings than that of the passing away of the young mother, Mrs. Carl Baxter, of whose death mention was made in last Thursday’s Tribune. Mrs. Baxter was a prime favorite with all that knew her. She had been taken suddenly sick on Saturday and the following Monday was taken to an Omaha hospital, where soon after an operation death claimed her.
The funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Hastings on Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Peter Jacobs of Randolph. The church was crowded with sympathizing friends, and the floral offerings were numerous. Gifts of these emblems of love came from a distance and some arrived too late for the funeral service.
Seventeen auto loads of relatives and friends accompanied the remains to the Randolph cemetery for burial. Six Knights of Pythias of the Hastings lodge were the active pall bearers, while six members of the Pythian Sisters, of which lodge the deceased was a member, were the honorary pallbearers. These pall bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Wallahan, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Shaw, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lookabill, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Christie, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilmot Bowman.
Bertha May Bailey was born at Herndon, Ia., February 25, 1892, and died at Omaha August 16, 1916. She was united in marriage to Carl Baxter in March, 1911. To this union four children were born, one dying in infancy. The children living are Dorothy, Donald and Robert. She leaves besides these children her husband and a mother, and other relatives.
The deceased united with the M.E. church at the age of 16 and became a member of the Phthian Sisters at Hastings a few years ago.
Those present from a distance at the funeral were Mrs. George Hohanshelt, her mother, of Jamaica, Ia., an aunt, Mrs. S.Z. Hurlbert, of the same place; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Murphy of St. Charles, Ia., uncle and aunt; Mr. and Mrs. George Hutton of University Place, Neb., uncle and aunt of Mr. Baxter; and Mrs. Nellie Shaw of Council Bluffs, who had been her nurse in a previous illness.
