Thursday, May 16, 1889 pg 4Death of B.L. Hays
After many years of illness, B.L. Hays died at the family residence in Malvern, on Friday morning last. The funeral services were held at the house Sunday afternoon, Rev. M.R. Harned preaching the sermon. Interment took place in Malvern Cemetery.
Mr. Hays was born in Ohio in the year 1830. In 1854, at Fairfield, Iowa, he was united in marriage with Miss Mahala Byers, his surviving wife. Deceased came to Mills County with his family in 1867, where he remained a resident until the day of his death. He enlisted to defend the flag of his country, in the 4th Iowa Cavalry, and remained in active service until his health failed, when he was discharged and returned home. Supposing that he had regained his health he re-enlisted, only to become again unfitted by failing health, for the hardships of soldier life, and the second time received his discharge.
During the last three years of his life Mr. Hays was confined to his home almost constantly, being able to get down town but a very few times. He was an indulgent father and affectionate husband. The wife, five sons, three daughters and an aged father remain to revere his memory. Three sons in Oregon were unable to be at the funeral, as was also the father. The other members of the family were present.
