Horace Edward Greenwood, 78, of Shenandoah, formerly of Emerson, died Jan. 23, 2005. Funeral services were held Jan 27 at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. Rev. Rick Sleyster officiated the services. Burial was at the Emerson Cemetery.

Mr. Greenwood was the son of Horace and Gayle (Cramer) Greenwood, born March 13, 1926, in Emerson. He was a 1944 graduate of Emerson High School and joined the U.S. Marines immediately following graduation. He spent his 19th birthday in a foxhole on Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged in June 1946. After serving in the Marines, he then returned to the family business in Emerson, Greenwood Lumber. He was united in marriage to Ruth Grahn on Oct. 10, 1950, in the chapel at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Neb. He was the third generation to own and manage the business until he retired in 1982. While living in Emerson, Mr. Greenwood was a member of the First Baptist Church; American Legion Levi Burton Post #575; the Cemetery Association, where he took care of the cemetery records for many years; Senior Citizen’s Center; and Community Club. Over the years, he enjoyed hunting and trapping, gardening, woodworking, reading, cooking, bird watching and spending time with his family. He was most recently a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, where he and his wife have lived for the past five years.

Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Shenandoah; son Berkely Greenwood and wife Nancy of Glenwood; daughters Sherry Hambsch of Shenandoah and Shirley Orton and husband Stanley of Shenandoah; grandchildren Brian Maxine, Melissa Ross, Jeffrey Hambsch, Jason Kinsley and John, Scott and Erin of Greenwood; great-grandchildren Corby Ross, Soley Kinsley and Sophia Maxine; brother Berkely Greenwood and wife Marge of Yakima, Wash; sisters Betty Carlson and husband Russ of Waverly, Neb., and Jann Seal of Wickenburg, Ariz; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Emerson First Baptist Church or the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak was in charge of arrangements.
