July 6, 1967 pg 12FUNERAL SERVICES WERE THURSDAY FOR MRS. ATKINSON
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 29, at the Mansfield Funeral Home for Mrs. Ross Atkinson who passed away of a heart attack at her home on June 26. Rev. Hugh Shiveley officiated at the services.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Charles Costello, soloist and Mrs. William Blackburn, organist. Serving as pall bearers were Michael Martin, Verle Trively, Eugene Park, Ralph Costello, Royce Wederquist and Harold Swett. Caring for the flowers were Mrs. Michael Martin, Mrs. Eugene Park and Mrs. Verle Trively. Interment was in the Malvern Cemetery.
The following life sketch was read:
Bessie May Atkinson, eldest daughter of John and Sarah Cozad, was born in Plattsmouth, Nebr., on June 12, 1889. She passed away June 26, 1967 at the age of 78 years.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Henry, Walter, and Omer Cozad.
In early life she became a member of the Christian Church.
On Aug. 1, 1907, she was united in marriage to Ross Atkinson. To this union were born five children, Effie Lucille, who died in infancy, Theron, Ila, Maxine and Winifred.
After living in Malvern for about 20 years, they moved back to her husband's birthplace where they lived for 32 years. After his death she continued to make it her home until her death.
She was a great lover of flowers and enjoyed them in the garden and in her home. Much of her leisure time was devoted to crocheting, her favorite hobby. She enjoyed her frequent visits with her children, grandchildren and great grandchild.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Theron, of Lakeland, Ga.; daughters, Mrs. Ila Waller, Silver City, Mrs. Maxine Hatfield, Malvern, and Mrs. Winifred Myers, Omaha,Nebr.; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; four sisters, Mrs. Clara Atkinson and Mrs. Ethel Jackson, Malvern; Mrs. Gladys Green, Pacific Junction, and Mrs. Viola Tackett, Buena, Wash.; brothers, Robert of Fresno, Calif., and Ernest of Malvern; a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Relatives attending from a distance were Theron Atkinson, Lakeland, Ga.; Dr. Denis S. Atkinson, Galveston, Texas; David B. Manriquez, McCord AFB, Wash., Dion Manriquez, Iowa City: Mr. and Mrs. Dan Myers and Mrs. Sherry Springer of Omaha; other relatives and friends of Omaha, Pacific Junction, Randolph, Hernick, Red Oak and Silver City.
