Edward M. FlanaganEdward Martin Flanagan, whose mention in last week's LEADER, was born in Mills County, November 11, 1808, and was a few days more than nineteen years and four months of age. Being of a studious mind he donated himself too closely to his school duties, as the sequel proves, and his health gave way. His same thirst for knowledge induced him to return to his work at Shenandoah College before he had fully recovered from an attack of sickness, although he was never able after reaching the college the last time to resume his studies, being taken down almost immediately . President Croan, President of the Faculty, who accompanied the body home, says Mr. Flanagan was a splendid student and had the friendship and good will of all his companions, as well as the respect of his instructors. In his school duties, as in other matters, he was thorough and conscientious and exhibited an earnestness that was most commendable. Mr. Flanagan was also of a religious temperament and led such a life as might reasonably be looked for in one who rightly considered the responsibilities of life. His friends have the consolation of looking forward to a happy re-union, for he left evidences that he had not forgotten the important and was prepared to go.
The funeral occurred from the Presbytarian Church Thursday afternoon and the body was laid to rest in Liberty cemetery, four miles north of town.*The article said he was born in 1808, impossible with the age and date of death. L.S.
