Ernest Elmer Metcalf was born July 15, 1869 at Lowden, Mills County, Iowa. His parents were Thomas and Amanda nee Stroud Metcalf. His early childhood was spent in Pawnee County, Nebraska. In 1877, his parents homesteaded near Jewel Center, Kansas, living in a sod house for a year. on November 1, 1900, he was married to Carrie Price at the Methodist Church at Adams, Nebraska. In 1907, the family moved from Adams to Plymouth where Dr. Metcalf practiced Veterinary Medicine for 40 years. Following his retirement, he spent much of his time at his woodworking hobby. In February of this year, he suffered a fall and his health began failing rapidly, death occuring on March 13, 1959. Mrs. Metcalf preceded him in death in January 1951.
He is survived by 2 sons and 4 daughters; May Metcalf of Fairbury, Lloyd Metcalf of Plymouth, Mrs. J. A. (Doris) Cihlar of Lincoln, Mrs. Eunice Bahrt of the home, Dr. Elmer Metcalf of DeWitt and Mrs. Edwin Hahn (Louise) of DeWitt. Also surviving are 6 grandchidren and 3 bothers, Frank Metcalf of Joplin, Missouri, Clate Metcalf and Bert Metcalf, both of Carthage, Missouri.
