Clifford Simon Stille, 83, of Macedonia, died Jan. 2, 2003, at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs. Funeral services were held Jan. 4, 2003, at the Hertz Funeral Home in Carson. Pastor Marlene Brown officiated at the service. Burial was at the Glenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Stille was the son of Simon and Sarah Elizabeth (Fleer) Stille, born March 30, 1919, at his parent’s home in rural Clifford S. Stille Glenwood. He grew up in Glenwood, graduating from Glenwood High School in 1937. Following graduation, he began a lifelong career in farming and soon met Marjorie Magdalene Klindt. They were married at the Klindt home in St. Mary’s Township in Mills County on June 18, 1941. They made their home in the Strahan and Malvern areas before moving to Macedonia in 1957. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Sandra Ann and Carol Jane. Mr. Stille loved his career as a farmer and livestock producer and enjoyed woodworking, but community service was always of utmost importance to him. He donated many hours of service, not only on a local level, but also on the state and national level. He was an active member of the Macedonia Methodist Church, where he served as a lay leader and trustee, as well as a Sunday School teacher for 25 years and a choir member for 40 years. He was a member of the Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years,. served on the Board of Low Rent Housing and the John Hamilton Memorial Corporation. He served two terms on the M.A.P.A. Board in Omaha, Neb., and on the SCS Farm Advisory Committee for the Clarinda State Experimental Farm. He was chairman of the Macedonia Watershed and served 23 years as a committee member on the District Soil Conservation Board, serving as chairman for 10 years.
On the state level, Mr. Stille was elected vice chairman of the Conservation Commission and was appointed by Governor Ray to the State Soil Conservation Committee, where he served 12 years, two years as chairman and two years as vice chairman. He served as the first Rural Conservation Dept. chairman for an eight-county area. He had many articles written about him in local, state and national publications and received many awards during his career. In 1968, he was named by the “Wallace Farmer” magazine as a “Master Farmer of Iowa” and served as the organization’s president. In 1975, he was named “Outstanding Soil Conservation Commissioner” and, in 1980, was awarded the seven-state “United States Environmental Award” by Governor Ray. He was named the “Outstanding Beef Producer” in Pottawattamie County in 1985 and also served as the organization’s secretary-treasurer and director. Due to failing health, Mr. Stille moved to the Bethany Lutheran Home on March 12, 2001.
Mr. Stille was preceded in death by his parents; brother Alfred Stille; and sisters Alma Frohardt and Nora Vohs. He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Macedonia; daughters Sandra Ann Schuette and husband Clifford of Moorhead, Minn., and Carol Jane Carley and husband Doug of Oakland; grandchildren Jeff and Stephanie Carley of Treynor, Cirsten Krantz and Mike Bagaziniski of Chicago. Ill., Robb and Laura Carley of Shenandoah, Karin and Ted Bloemkčr. of Omaha, Kerry Krantz and fiance Wade Falke of Omaha, and Jason Carley of Underwood; step-grandchildren Jordan Schuette of Overland Park, Kan., and Carson Schuette of Moorhead, Minn.; greatgrandchildren Ryan, Taylor Alyssa and Jacob Carley of Treynor, Emily and Megan Carley of Shenandoah and Benjamin Bloemker and Jessica Falke of Omaha; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Hertz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
