Gary Wade Wood, 56, of Emerson, died Jan. 2, 2003, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak following an extended illness. A graveside memorial service was held Jan. 6, 2003, at the Emerson Cemetery. Pastor Clifford Speck officiated at the service.

Mr. Wood was the son of Leonard Douglas Wood and Margaret Marie Culver Wood Pieken, born June 17, 1946, in Creston. He graduated from Glenwood High School and worked for Meadow Gold Dairy as a door-to-door delivery man in Malvern, Pacific Junction, Glenwood and Council Bluffs. He later worked for Roberts Dairy in Omaha. He became a CNA and worked at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital until failing health caused him to leave on disability in May 2002. He also served in the Iowa National Guard.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Edwin Gladwin. He is survived by children Greg Wood and wife Lora of Clarinda and Monica Carlson and husband Reggie of Essex; granddaughter Anna Carlson of Essex; a friend to whom Gary was caregiver, Alex Kineiko of the home; sisters Connie Parks and husband Layne of Glenwood, Janice Irick of Glenwood and Judith Gladwin of Fort Collins, Colo.; and brother Hobbie Pieken of Silver City.

A memorial fund has been established. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.
