DEATH OF CALVIN N. HALL

Calvin N. Hall, one of the aged residents of Emerson, passed away at his home there Saturday, April 19. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Emerson M.E. church conducted by the pastor Rev. Walter A. Morgan. The following is the obituary as read there:

Calvin N. Hall was born in Allen county, Ohio, August 31, 1846. He enlisted as a volunteer soldier in the Civil War, in Company H. 74th, Ohio and served 16 months, being honorably discharged at Louisville, Kentucky, after receiving a gunshot wound.

He then came to Marion, Linn county, Iowa, where he was later married, January 4, 1870, to Miss Nancy Lawrence. To this union twelve children were born: Sherman, Charles R., Mrs. Lizzie Largent, Frank J., Mrs. Jane Thompson, Nelson J., Calvin Otis, Mrs. Maggie Clites, Mrs. Maude Crouse, Claude C., Mrs. Effie Hatfield and Miss Edith Hall. The last named is still at home and has been her father's constant companion since her mother's death. The eldest child died at the age of three years. There are 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He with his wife united with the United Brethren church some 20 years ago and he has ever since lived an earnest Christian life. His wife preceded him to the great Beyond, September 15, 1911. They lived on a farm for a number of years but later being unable to do the heavy work on a farm they removed to Emerson and bought a home where they spent their remaining years. He had been a sufferer from leakage of the heart for the past year and this finally caused his death.
