Another Civil War Veteran Answers Roll Call - - Another of the veterans of our late Civil War has answered his last roll call and has been called to higher service in the death of W. DeHart who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.C. Kayton in Malvern, Sunday about noon after an extended period of illness. While Mr. DeHart had spent the greater part of his time in Mills County in Emerson he was well known here where his genial humor and strict integrity and uprightness of character won him lasting friends.

The funeral services were held from the Kayton home, Tuesday afternoon at 2:45 and were conducted by Rev. M.A. Gable of the Methodist church assisted by Rev. W.H. Doyle of the Methodist church at Emerson. A special choir Messrs. R.W. Criswell and J.R. McClymond and Mesdames F.R. Chantry and L.D. Austen sang. Members of the G.A.R. were in attendance and acted as a guard of honor at the cemetery. The pall bearers were C.P. Kinney of Glenwood, T.A. Kinney of Sidney, D.S. Kinney of Emerson, H.H. Kayton of Strahan, W.J. Adams of Emerson and W.P. Wortman of Malvern. The remains were interred in the Malvern cemetery.

The following obituary was read:

Winant DeHart was born in New Jersey October 29, 1829, but when he was about two years old his parents moved to Ohio, and there he grew to maturity. He was one of a family of eight children there being five brothers and two sisters.

Coming into full manhood, during the stirring scenes of the Civil War and four of his brothers having given themselves to their county and joined the union army, he too enlisted. One of the brothers made the supreme sacrifice while the subject of this sketch became seriously ill thru exposure, from the effects of which he never fully recovered.

Mr. DeHart was married to Rachel A. Garrison, October 30th, 1862, and to this union were born six children, three of whom survive him. They were Mrs. E.C. Kayton and Emma DeHart of this city and William DeHart of Norfolk, Nebr. - - Mr. and Mrs. DeHart came to this County in October of the year 1886 and located in Emerson. The wife and mother passed away June 6th, 1911.

Father DeHart united with the Methodist Episcopal Church soon after his marriage and has been a constant and conscientious member ever since. He was a man of deep convictions and unfaltering trust while the Holy Bible was his constant companion.

A kindly humor pervaded his personality and this eternal sunshine in his soul together with a calm confidence in his Saviour combined to bring comfort and cheer to all around him even when the weight of years hung heavy upon him.

Quietly and peacefully as the passing of darkness into dawn his released spirit left the temple of clay soon after noon on the fifteenth of December, 1918, having just recently passed his 89th birthday.
