The Mills County friends of Alex Tipton were shocked to hear of his brief illness last week, terminating in his sudden death Saturday. While in not very robust health for some time past, his last illness was of but few days duration.
Alexander Tipton was born in Coahocton Coutny, Ohio, November 24, 1836 and died at his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, May 1, 1909.
He came from Ohio to Illinois in 1855 and to Iowa in 1865, locating at Glenwood where he resided until ten years ago when he moved to Council Bluffs.
He was married to Mary Jane Cole, April 10, 1859. One child, a daughter blessed this union. She died in 1905.
Mr. Tipton united with the Baptist Church in 1858 and remained a consistent member until the time of his death. He was a prime mover and the originator in fact of the movement which resulted in the building go the Memorial Baptist Church in Council Bluffs. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. order, having joined the Glenwood lodge in 1871 and was a member of the same in good standing at the time of his death.
He had worked at the fire insurance business exclusively since 1874 and during all that time handled business for the Iowa State of Keokuk.
The funeral was held Monday, May 3. Short services were conducted at the late residence, with Rev. W. J. Bells of the Memorial Baptist Church in charge, assisted by Rev. F. A. Case and Rev. Henry DeLong. The remains were brought to Glenwood on No. 4 and services held from the Baptist Church under the direction of the Glenwood I.O.O.F. and the remains laid to rest in the Glenwood Cemetery.
Deceased is survived by the wife, three brothers: S. A. and S. B. of Malvern and John of Glenwood; two sisters, Mesdames E. A. Crawmer of Wichita, Kansas and Mrs. J. H. Crabbily of LaHarpe, Illinois.
Among those in attendance from abroad were Rev. W. J. Bell and F. A. Case, Sylvester Dye, J. Underwood, and Attorney F. W. Miller of Council Bluffs; Miss Eva Head and Mrs. W. G. Templeton of Omaha; Mrs. A. Caravelle and son John of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. E. Cole of Emerson; Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Boston and A. Ring of Malvern; Percy Parker of Corning; Mrs. Clarence Warren of Beatrice, Nebraska and C. M. Rice of Tabor.
