Margaret M. Pieken, 76, Emerson

Margaret Marie Pieken, 76, of Emerson, died December 26, 2002, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Graveside services were held December 30, 2002, at the Emerson Cemetery. Rev. Clifford Speck officiated at the service.

Mrs. Pieken was the daughter of Noel Carl and Luella (Jennings) Culver, born February 9, 1926, in Grand River. She attended the Maloy, Benton and Mount Ayr, Iowa schools. She later earned her GED in Council Bluffs. She married Leonard D. Wood on December 7, 1946. They made their home in Clearfield and were blessed with two children. In 1953 she began work as a clothing clerk at the Glenwood State Hospital-School. She married Earl E. Pieken on February 14, 1955. Earl's two daughters joined the family, and they were blessed with a son. She worked at the Glenwood State Hospital-School for 35 years before retiring in 1988. That same year, Mr. and Mrs. Pieken moved to Emerson, where they made many new friends. Mrs. Pieken was a member of the Emerson United Methodist Church. In 1998, due to ill health, Mrs. Pieken moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Villisca and, in 2001, Mrs. Pieken moved to an apartment in Glenwood. Her failing health forced her to move to the Tabor Manor Care Center on September 24, 2002.

Mrs. Pieken was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl Pieken; brother Raymond Culver; and sister Maxine George. She is survived by daughters Judith Gladwin of Fort Collins, Colo., Janice Irick of Glenwood and Connie Parks and husband Layne of Glenwood; sons Hobbie Pieken and wife Mari Jo of Silver City and Gary Wood of Emerson; 10 grandchilden; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Glenwood Volunteer Rescue. Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern was in charge of arrangements.
