Retha Jane Woten, daughter of Hugh and Lottie Woten, was born in a sod dugout near Hazard, Nebraska, on April 2, 1885, and passed away September 28, 1969, at the Nishna Cottage Rest Home in Malvern at the age of 84 years, five months, and 26 days. She had recently broken her arm and had been hospitalized in a Council Bluffs Hospital.
At an early age she came with her parents, brother and sisters to Winterset. This being where both her parents were converted and baptized in the Christian Church. In January 1903, she was converted and baptized in the Christian Church at Massena at the age of 18.
On September 24, 1904, at Blair, Nebraska, she was united in marriage to Claude C. Findley of Villisca. To this union were born 10 children of which four survive.
They moved to Hasting in 1939 where they made their home until the passing of Mr. Findley in 1955. Following his death, she later made her home in 1965 at the Nishna Cottage Rest Home.
She was a Gold Star mother, having lost her youngest son, Everett A. Findley in World War II in North Africa in 1942. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, her husband, and six children.
She is survived by two sons, Ira L., of Chandler, Arizona, and Marvin L., of Milton Freewater, Oregon; two daughters, Mrs. Effie Orr, of Chandler, Arizona, and Mrs. Vera Wooten, of Malvern; four sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Landon, Red Oak; Mrs. Rosie Williams, Imogene; Mrs. Ethel Krhone, Sheridan, Wyoming, and Mrs. Lydia Martin, Walthill, Nebraska; three brothers, Arthur Woten, Litchfield, Nebraska, Loran Woten, Dakota City, Nebraska, and Claude Woten, address unknown; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was dearly loved by all.
Mrs. Findley during all these years has held fast to her faith in God and wanted to serve her Master as long as life should last. She was always seeking more souls for Christ. She taught Sunday School classed for many years, with a prayer in her heart and a song on her lips.
The last few weeks of her life, she had been busy meditating and praying and getting ready for her journey, leaving nothing between her soul and the Saviour.
Funeral services were held at the Mansfield Funeral Home, October 1, at 2 p.m., the Rev. Warren Hughes officiant.
Pall bearers were Tom Price, John White, Dean Robert, and Harry Wooten and Darwin Sutherland, Mrs. Joe Walker was at the registry book and Mrs. Homer Connell, Mrs. Clark Templeton and Mrs. Earl Pace cared for the flowers. Mrs. W. G. Blackburn was organist and accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Edel Knight as she sand “Under His Wing,” and “The Solid Rock.”
Interment was in the Hastings Cemetery.
