February 14, 1901

Mrs. Rachel C. Johnson died at her home southwest of Glenwood, yesterday afternoon, after an illness lasting two weeks. The deceased had been afflicted with organic heart disease for many years past, and it was known that her death was liable to occur at any time. Then the pain two or three years of her life have been embittered by annoying and countless litigation, first with the P.P.K. bondsmen and then with fruit tree peddlers. All then has hastened the end which finally came, as we stated, yesterday. Mrs. Johnson was 55 years of age at the time of her death and was one of the old time settlers of Mills County. She was twice married, her first husband having been dead many years. Her second husband John Johnson died four years ago last summer. She has nine children living, two sons, by her first husband and five sons and two daughters by her second husband. These are William, John, Joseph, Robert and Charles and Ellen and Carrie. The deceased was a woman of strong character and indomitable will and her second husband’s marked financial success is attributable in large part to her energy and determination. The funeral service will be held tomorrow at the residence.
