OBITUARY - - Samuel Jamison Stockton was born in Hancock county, Illinois, June 9, 1848. Was converted at the Cumberland Presbyterian church in 1861. In 1864, a boy 16 years of age, he enlisted in the army and remained in the service until the close of the war. He was married to Mary M. Douglas, Dec. 10, 1868, in Henderson county, Ill. To this couple two daughters were born; Etta L., now Mrs. N.W. Collings, and Nellie B. Besides his family, Mr. Stockton leaves a sister, mother and other relatives to mourn his loss.

Mr. and Mrs. Stockton came to Mills county in 1869 and in 1874 he united with the M.E. church at Fairview near Strahan under the pastorate of Rev. John Elliott. He died at the Immanuel Hospital, April 13, 1899, where he had gone for medical treatment. In Mr. Stockton's death Hastings loses a good citizen and neighbor, the family a kind husband and loving father.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the M.E. church in Hastings, conducted by Rev. J.J. Varley, burial taking place in the Malvern cemetery.
