Malvern Leader
Jan 16, 1906

DEATH OF THOMAS M BRITT - - Thomas M. Britt, formerly representative of this county in the state legislature and a long time resident of Center township, died at his home in Sioux Falls last Saturday morning and was brought to Malvern for burial on Monday. The funeral was conducted at the Methodist church by Rev. W.W. Bollinger and Rev H.R. Waldo after which the remains were laid to rest in the Malvern cemetery.

Mr. Britt had been sick for some time past with that dread disease, creeping paralysis so that the end was not unlooked for by his immediate friends. His step-son Will Dunlap accompanied the remains here and the other boys were here to attend the funeral.

He leaves two children, Mrs. E.L. Donner, who lives near Balfour and Dr. Will Britt of Creighton, Nebraska. The latter missed his connections at Omaha and did not get here until after the funeral was over.

Funeral services were also held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at his late home in Sioux Falls.

T.M. Britt was born Dec. 2, 1835, in Hardin Co, TN. Feb 16, 1859, he was married to Martha Dunagan of Glenwood. To them were born three children, one son dying at an early age. About ten years ago he was united in marriage to Frona (FLORA) Dunlap of Malvern, who survives him. Mr. Britt left three sisters and one brother.

He enlisted in Co B 29th Iowa Infantry in August, 1862, and served with honor during the war, rising to the position of Orderly sergeant.

Returning to this county after the war he built him a fine country home in Center township where he lived for many years, selling out a few years ago and going to California and later to Sioux Falls where he resided at the time of his death.

He was twice elected to the state legislature from this county, serving his constituency faithfully and well.

He was one of Mills County 's foremost pioneers and will long be remembered by our older people.
