Obituary

Eugene Earl (Gene) Den Hartog passed away on October 31, 2007, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, following complications from congestive heart failure.

Gene was born July 25, 1928, on a farm outside Otley, Iowa. He graduated from Pella High School in 1946. He served in the Army in Korea, and later graduated from Chicago Technical Institute with a degree in architecture in 1956.

Gene married his wife of 52 years, Barbara (Henderson) Den Hartog, on June 17, 1955, at Malvern, Iowa. The couple made their home in Des Moines in 1962. Gene and his wife were blessed with five children. Gene was employed throughout his career as an architect with various local architectural firms, and the Farmers Home Administration Agency. He retired from the FmHA in 1997, after over 20 years of service.

Gene was active in many religious and service organizations, including duties as an elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and later at Heartland Presbyterian Church. Gene was an avid gardener, and active member of the Men's Garden Club. Gene enjoyed photography, and also was a member of the Golden Circle Kiwanis Club.

Gene is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their children: Cheryl (Greg) Helton of Des Moines, Greg (Beth) of Des Moines, Rob (Brenda) of Des Moines, Janet (Hugh) Lenzer of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jill (Roger) Powell of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Gene is also survived by ten grandchildren, as well as a large extended family.

Funeral services will be held at Heartland Presbyterian Church, located at 14300 Hickman Road, Clive, on Saturday, November 3, 2007, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held at Iles Westover Funeral Home, located at 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, on Friday, November 2, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Presbyterian Church or the Mens Garden Club.
