ANOTHER OF MILLS COUNTY'S
PIONEERS PASSES AWAY IN
MALVERN JUNE 13; FUNERAL
SUNDAY JUNE 15.
Alfred Bellwood,
One of the Well known residents of Mills County
Passed away at his home in south Malvern, Friday evening June 13 after a long period of ill health. The Funeral was held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the late residence and was largely attended for Mr. Bellwood was well known especially in the eastern part of the county where he had resided for many years. A special choir, Misses Liva Richards and Lela Salyers and Messrs. R. w. R. W. Criswell and Fred Stone with Miss Durbin at the organ sang. Rev Walter A. Morgan of the Emerson M. E. Church conducted the services. The pall bearer were Messers. Fred Durbin, Willis Clark, Wm. Kneeland, G. C. Boston, Geo. Schurr and George F. Salyers. The remains were laid to rest in the Malvern cemetery. Among the relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Miss Delia Bellwood and Mrs. Rebecca Cox of Abington, Ill., Frank Day and wife, C. P. Kinney and wife, S. M. Criswell and wife and Frank Wallace of Glenwood, G. H. Brewer and wife and Albert Bellwood of Omaha.
The following is. the obituary as read at the services: Alfred Bellwood was born in Ohio, February 27, 1836. While yet, a small child he moved with his parents to Illinois where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Susan B. Shay at Abingdon, Illinois, February 24, 1859. To them were born eight children. One of them died in infancy, and another , Jacob died about two years ago. The others, Benjamin f., Lyle, Levi and Lemuel, Mrs. James Roberts and Miss Addie Bellwood survive him and were all with him in his last hours to comfort and minister unto him. The beloved wife passed away April 27, 1909. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Cox, and Miss. Delia Bellwood of Abingdon, ILL.,
and two brothers., Dr. H. H. Bellwood of Alliance, Nebr. and James Bellwood of Long Beach, California. They came to Iowa shortly after their marriage and located in Union county and a few years later they came to Mills County where the greater part of their lives was spent. They lived in Deer Creek until a few years ago when they moved to this vicinity. The past few years' of his life Mr. Bellwood was an invalid and the last four years he was confined to his bed and entirely helpless, and yet through it all he was cheerful and uncomplaining. He was a man of strong convictions in what he considered right and always ready to defend his convictions. He was a great and intelligent reader and was well posted on all the leading topics of the day up until the last. He loved his family and his friends and was never better pleased than when surrounded by friends and family in his hospitable home. So long as he was in health Mr. Bellwood was one of our leading farmers and was among the very first to introduce pure bred stock into his country and always took great interest in the county fairs where he frequently exhibited stock and other products. He was an honorable man and a good clean citizen and will be greatly missed by all who know him.
