GEORGE ESTES' LIFE CLOSES

A Respected and Honored Citizen of Mills County Goes to His Reward

George H. Estes, after many months of illness, passed away last Friday at his home in Glenwood. Mr. Estes bravely and unflinchingly faced the inevitable since that day, some months ago, when he was taken ill and was given no hope - despite the best medical care - of a permanent recovery. At one time it seemed that he would upset the predictions of physicians and the misgivings of his friends. He recovered from the first attack to be able to come downtown and greet once again his scores of acquaintances face to face.

This gain proved not to be permanent, and again he kept close to home, and uncomplainingly faced the future.

He fell into a comatose state two days before death claimed him.

Mr. Estes was a man genial to a degree, especially among his close friends, and a man devoted to the welfare and happiness of his family. He kept his homelife intact, though his wife died several years ago. His mother has been the head of his household since. He was amply able to travel with his children to live and have them provided for at any place that fancy might dictate, but he preferred the quiet of a home life, that his children might be fixtures to the roof tree in his home town. He purchased the late D.L. Heinsheimer residence a few years ago and maintained it in a manner to make it a place where his children would learn to love the joys of home living.

Mr. Estes was for many years active in all the affairs of farm life. He was a trader and dealed in stock and in land, and his judgement along those lines resulted in the acquirement by him of a good share of his wealth. He was one of the promoters of the Glenwood State Bank and was its president at the time of his death. Mr. Estes was decisive in his political views and was a Democrat of the old school. Though a worker in the party, he never asked or even accepted the nomination for an office. He served for a time as deputy under Sheriff Lewis Linville.

The funeral occured on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the home of the deceased, conducted by Rev. D.S. Thompson of Griswold. The funeral attendance was large, despite the weather, and the shortness of the time after notices were given out. The floral offerings bespoke the affection and regard in which the deceased was held. Burial was in the Glenwood cemetery.

The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Harry Hamilton, A.H. Otis, E.R. Herrick, and H.H. Dean.

The pallbearers were Wm. Skillicorn, D.R. Lewis, D.G. Jamison, R.R. Mickelwait, S.M. Criswell and Clyde Rhoads.

George H. Estes was born June 14, 1863, and died November 26, 1915, at the age of 52 years, 5 months and 12 days.

He was born on a farm near Glenwood, the son of William M. Estes, now deceased, and Hester A. Estes, and was the oldest of seven children - Mrs. C.W. Evans of LeMars, Iowa; Mrs. Fay Wright, Richard, William, Samuel, and Margaret all of Glenwood.

On November 16, 1892, he was married to Claudia Elnora Mayberry and to this union were born two children - Winifred and Claude. His wife passed from this life January 19, 1901.

Mr. Estes, as far as was known, never made any profession of faith, but he had his own ideals according to which he lived.

Those present at the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harrison and Samuel Harrison from Onawa and Whiting, James Lamasney of Olathe, Kansas; Miss Aileen Michael of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. James Sage of Plattsmouth, Neb.; Fay Scott of Emmet, Neb.; Frank Plumer and Arthur Burgoin of Silver City; Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Estes, Mr. and Mrs. H. Delavan, Mr. and Mrs. M. Collins; Mrs Arthur Weatherhead and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Estes Jr., all of Tabor; and Cal Hammack of Hastings, and Mrs. Frank Plumer of Silver City.
