GLENWOOD OPINION-TRIBUNE
DATED THURS., NOVEMBER 11, 1943:Relatives in Glenwood have received word of the death of a former well known early day resident of Glenwood, Mrs. Robert Hale, who died at her home in Los Angeles, October 23rd, 1943, aged 90 years and 7 months. Burial was made by the side of her husband in Inglewood cemetery in Los Angeles.
Older residents of this city will remember her as Miss Candace Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Wright, pioneer residents of this community and a sister of the late Frank Wright, also a sister of Charlie Wright of Genoa and Mrs. Fannie Burkett of Lincoln.
Mrs. Hale was born in Putnam County, Indiana, March 27th, 1853 and came with her parents to Glenwood when about 18 months of age. In her youth she attended a girls boarding school, conducted by a Mrs. Cooley, in a building which was later the home of A. J. Russell and the present site of the Dr. E. C. Magaret home at 416 North Walnut Street. After her marriage to Robert Hale they resided in a home at the intersection of Third and Walnut Street, the present home of K. S. Powers. Mr. Hale at this time conducted a general store, at the location of the present Robinson Jewelry store. They later moved to Greeley, Colorado, where Mr. Hale engaged in the Banking business, moving from there to Los Angeles he continued in the same business for many years.
Mrs. Hale is survived by but one of her large family of children, Mrs. Helen Hill. One of her sons, Winfield Hale was an early aviator. Some may recall when he visited here, his using the field south of his Uncle Frank Wright’s home farm east of Glenwood as a landing field. His airplane was quite a novelty here at that time and attracted many people to see him “take off” or “land.” He was later killed while flying in he mountain regions of South America.
