GLENWOOD OPINION-TRIBUNE
DATED MON., JULY 11, 1932:Mary Elizabeth Buffington, the daughter of Elijah H. and Mattie Jane Buffington, was born July 25, 1871 near Springfield in Sarpy County, Neb., and came with her parents in March, 1872, to Mills County, at which time they located on the farm north of Glenwood, which has been the family home ever since, and where she spent her entire life.
She received her early education in the schools of this community and during the years of her girlhood united with the Methodist church, ever remaining faithful to its principles and its teachings.
She passed away at the family home July 5 following an illness of several months, in which time she fought bravely and uncomplainingly against the ravages of disease.
Her’s was a life of self sacrificing devotion to family and friends. She gave unreservedly of her time and interest, never thinking of herself and it could well be said of her as was said of the Master, “She came not to be ministered unto, but rather to minister unto others.”
In the declining years of the life of her mother, who passed away April 13, 1923, this devoted daughter brought comfort and cheer by her service and devotion and since has been a great source of sustaining comfort to the aged father.
Her lifes activities having been largely confined to the sphere of her own household and the immediate community it was not the privilege of many to know her intimately, but all who did proclaim the beauty of her character which ever sought the best and ever refrained from speaking ill concerning anyone. The power and influence of such a life for good will live with the memory which family and friends will hold ever in fond recollection.
She leaves besides her aged father, three sisters, Mrs. Media Williams of Melvern, Kan., Mrs. Eva Prindle and Irene of this community; three brothers, Frank of Strahan and George and Marion of this community, and a host of more distant relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Glenwood Methodist church Thursday afternoon, with the pastor, Rev. J. F. Bingaman, in charge. Music for the service was furnished by Mary Logan Yates, Mrs. George E. Masters, W. C. Rathke and S. M. Criswell, with Mrs. Clyde Rhoads at the piano. The flower girls were Dorothy Slaughter, Helen Stille, Mable Kates, Nell Thomas and Violet Schoening. The pallbearers were Richard, Max and Ben Jackson, Geo. Wright, Chris Voss and Louie Buffington.
The body was laid to rest in the family lot in the West Liberty cemetery.
