THE OPINION-TRIUNE
DATED SEPTEMBER 30, 1987

Funeral services for Dean Jackson, 89, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, were Sept. 23, 1987 at Peterson Mortuary.

The Rev. George Weitzel officiated with burial at the Glenwood Cemetery.

Jackson was born Feb. 22, 1898 in Mills County. He died Sept. 16, 1987.

Jackson had lived in Colorado Springs since 1969, but had may relatives and friends in Glenwood and Mills County.

He was born in Center Township to Richard O. Jackson and Effie Buffington Jackson. He was educated in rural schools of the county and at Glenwood High School, and in 1918 he married Eula Francis Woods of Glenwood.

The couple had two children, Donald D., who resides in Colorado Springs with his wife, Mary Catherine; and Robert Woods, who was on the crew of the battleship Arizona in 1941 at Pearl Harbor, when the ship was lost with most of her crew at the beginning of World War II.

Robert thus became the first casualty of this country when the war began.

Eula Woods Jackson preceded her husband in death in 1924, as did Dean’s second wife, Ruth Opal Dean, in 1940.

Dean engaged in farming at Hillsdale during the first half of his life. His membership in the Mills County Farm Bureau was continuous since 1918, and he was a member of the Glenwood Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star.

His love for horses developed during this period and there always were American Saddle Breds or quarter horses, or at least a shetland pony, for the boys. As recently as two years ago, while his health permitted, he was serving as grand marshal at local horse shows.

In 1949, Dean purchased a ranch near Wolbach in Greeley County, Neb., where he was to be in active cattleman until his retirement in 1960.

Dean’s immediate family was now reduced to son Don, who had become a university professor and writer. For many long years, Dean has shared interests with his close neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Paul McMahill.

Dean is also survived by two grandchildren, Robert of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Mark of San Francisco; sisters, Ferne Widows and Jennie Williams of Glenwood; brothers, Glen and Ben of Glenwood, and Max of Lincoln, Neb.

His brothers, Richard and Hobart, preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were Arthur Thieschafer, Bernard McIntire, Forrest Mayberry, Jerry Towne, Carl Bush and John Dean.
