MILLS COUNTY TRIBUNE
DATED JULY 10, 1902:

The death of D. H. Solomon marks the departure of one who was prominent not only as a pioneer of Glenwood, but who also took an active part in shaping the history of the State of Iowa.

He came to Glenwood in 1853, and was our first school teacher. Later as an attorney he achieved a wide reputation for his sound counsel as well as his ability as a trial lawyer; and he was one of the board selected to revise the constitution of Iowa.

He was without doubt the original promoter of the proposed Panama canal, and since leaving here ten years ago he has visited Venezuela and Europe in the interest of that project. He has of late years made his home in St. Louis and has attained prominence in law circles there.

We have no particulars of his death, further than that while at Owenbury, Ky., the first week of this week, he was overcome by the heat and died without recovering.

He was 76 years of age. His relatives in Glenwood are Mrs. R. B. Townsend, a sister, and Mrs. J. Y. Stone, a half sister.

Daniel owned vast expanses of real estate. One tract was 600 acres and contained 13 miles of orchard. He laid out a town on another section of land, which he called Solomon, Iowa. He then built the Wabash Railroad which ran through town. He purchased the building contract from B.W. Lewes of St. Louis who later cheated Daniel out of much of his dues.

Daniel died at the train depot he helped build. He had walked there to send off his daughter and grandchild to St. Louis. After the train came, Daniel had a sun stroke. He fell and broke his collar bone and died before medical help could be summoned.
