THE MALVERN LEADER
DATED JANUARY 8, 1931:

Phillip Slaughter was born northeast of Glenwood on Dec. 28, 1872, and died at his home near Malvern on Monday, Dec. 22, 1930, at the age of fifty-seven years, eleven months, and twenty-five days, lacking just six days of reaching his fifty-eighth birthday.

He was the son of Fred and Mary Slaughter. At the age of fourteen years he united with the Baptist church in Glenwood, being baptized in the old church Jan. 13, 1886. On May 7, 1890, at the age of eighteen years, he was married to Rosa Johnson, his beloved and devoted wife, and the two young people set out to fight life’s battles together. Most of their life since has been lived on their farm, as he loved the occupation of farming.

He was a man loved and respected in his community, he being of a kindly and friendly disposition. In addition to this he was of sober and industrious habits and labored hard to maintain the home in which he died.

He leaves to grieve for his passing his wife and two children, LeRoy Slaughter and Mildred, the wife of Clifford Kelley; two grandchildren, Eugene and Ruth Evelyn Kelley. Besides these there are a brother and sister, John Slaughter and Mrs. Lucinda Emerine; two foster brothers and three foster sisters.

Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church in Glenwood on last Wednesday with the pastor, Rev. John Erb, officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Edith Loeffler, Mrs. Wm. Lugsch, S. M. Criswell, and Harry Hamilton, with Mrs. C. T. Genung at the organ. The pallbearers were W. P. Creech, J. L. Ross, F. G. Davis, Geo. Brower, Jr., Chas. Karr and Allen Watts. Members of the Glenwood I.O.O.F. lodge of which Mr. Slaughter was a member, attended the services and acted as an escort of honor. The I.O.O.F. ritualistic services were given at the grave in the Glenwood cemetery, where the body was laid to rest. --- Opinion-Tribune.
