The Glenwood Opinion-Tribune
dated March 1920:

Janet May Slaughter was born in Mills County, IA., in 1874 and departed this life at her home near Sanborn, Neb., Sunday, March 21, 1920, aged 46 years.

She was united in marriage to A. H. Emerine at Glenwood in 1888. Five children came to gladden this union, four of whom still survive. She moved with her family to Brookfield, MO., and later to Butler, MO. About a month ago the family moved to a ranch in southwest Nebraska near the Colorado line, and no sooner had they reached their destination when they were stricken with the flu and later with the measles, from an attack of which the mother failed to recover and on Sunday she passed to her reward.

In early life she was converted and united with the Baptist church in Glenwood, Ia., and remained a faithful member of that denomination until called to the “church triumphant.” Mrs. Emerine was a most earnest and devoted Christian, cheerful, optimistic, interested, alert and ever busy. The welfare of others occupied her attention and time. He disposition was of the most optimistic kind.

She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, four children, Mrs. Edith Coyle, Frank, Hazel and Olive, two brothers, Phil Slaughter, who resides near Glenwood, and J. Slaughter of Hillsdale, three half-brothers and three half-sisters and a large circle of friends and acquaintances who deeply regret her sudden departure.

The funeral services were conducted b the Rev. Alexander Bryans, pastor of the M. E. church, and her body laid to rest in the Silver City cemetery.
