12 February 1891

The people of Silver City were greatly shocked Thursday to hear of the death of Mrs. D. F. Smith which occurred early that morning at the home of her son-in-law, J. Milligan, at Randolph, where she had been visiting for some time. She was making preparations to return home when she was attacked with paralysis of the heart and passed away after a few hours sickness. The remains were brought to Silver City Friday and taken to her husband's home east of town. The funeral was held at the M. E. Church Saturday at 11 a.m. and was attended by a large number of sympathizing neighbors and friends who were deeply affected by Rev. Mr. Jean's sermon from Revelations 14, 13: "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." After the close of the services at the church the remains were laid to rest in the Silver City cemetery.

Elizabeth Hocker was born in Pennsylvania, Nov. 22, 1833. Was married to David F. Smith Nov. 21, 1850. In 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Muscatine County, Iowa, and remained there until 1873 when they removed to the place which has since been their home, two miles east of Silver City.

Deceased was the mother of nine children, eight daughters and one son, six of which, all daughters, are still living and with her husband are left to mourn the departure of the loving wife and mother.

Mrs. Smith was a consistent Christian and church member, having been converted in early life, and at the time of her death was a member of the M. E. Church of Silver City.

We desire to return our heartfelt thanks to our friends and neighbors both at Randolph and Silver City who so kindly assisted us during our recent bereavement.
