Smith and Clifton Families

SMITHS AND CLIFTONS

My 3rd great grandmother was Mary Jane Clifton (1849), and my 3rd great grandfather was Edwin (Edward?) Smith (abt 1843). Mary Jane's father was Francis Marion Clifton, and her mother was Ella Lorena Dimmon; Ella's name is spelled various ways. She was from Tennessee. they lived in Marshalltown, Iowa until after the Civil War.

I have been doing my family tree and found a lot of information about Mary Jane but very little about Edwin Smith until recently. I just found a record for an Edwin C. Smith's father (John B.). He was married to a Catherine ? and Esther Metcalf.

John fought in the war of 1812, and one of his other sons fought in the Mexican-American war. Edwin, according to family lore, fought with Sherman during the Civil war. Is anyone familiar with these people, and can you tie the Smith family to the Cliftons?

My tree is on Ancestry.com
