Richard Fleming, age 85, of Gladbrook, passed away at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center on Tuesday, January 14, 2009 after a short illness. Services will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 17, 2009, at Gladbrook Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 P.M., Friday, January 16, 2009 at Goettsch Funeral Home in Gladbrook.
Richard was born September 13, 1923, the son of John Ray and Henrietta Milholland Fleming. He graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1941. Richard farmed with his father and raised purebred shorthorn cattle. On June 6, 1948, Richard was united in marriage with Harriett Wirth at the Christian Church in Garwin. He was employed at the US Department of Agriculture for 14 years, retiring in 1987. Richard was a 4H leader for many years. He and his wife lived on the farm where he was born until March of last year when he and Harriett moved to Westbrook Independent Living. Richard was a long time member of the Marshall County Farm Bureau, Chapel United Methodist Church, Gladbrook Lions Club, Marshall County Cattlemens Association, and the National Association of Federal Retired Employees.
Richard is survived by his wife, Harriett Fleming, his children: Carolyn (Vaugn) Kloster of Manly, Janet (David) Yungbluth of Rossi, Thomas (Brenda) Fleming of Marshalltown, Barbara (Fred) Yergler of Gibson City, Illinois, James (LeAnn) Fleming of Garwin; grandchildren: Chris, Richard and Michael Kloster, Kevin and Adam Yungbluth, Aaron Fleming, Joshua and Korissa Yergler, Phillip and Shannon Fleming; sisters: Vera Hall of Marshalltown and Jean Elliott of Conrad.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John R. Fleming.
