W. H. STIPP, PIONEER GRAIN DEALER, DEAD

Early Elevator Owner and Old Resident of State Center Passes Away Here of Ailments Brought by Age — Was Illinois Veteran of Civil War.

W. H. Stipp, retired grain dealer and elevator owner who was actively engaged in business in this county for forty-five years, died at 8 o'clock this morning at his home, 409 North Fourth street, of ailments of age, following an illness of six months. Mr. Stipp was 81 years old. Mr. Stipp's principal grain business was for years at State Center, where at one time he was president of the State Center Land Company, that owned much I land in North Dakota. He built the i elevator and hotel there, and was also at one time mayor of the town. Later Mr. Stipp became president of the St. Anthony Savings Bank, and was also engaged in the grain business there.

He moved to this city eighteen years ago.

Mr. Stipp was born in Waynesville, near Springfield, Ill., June 15, 1842. He was reared on the farm, was educated in the public schools, and was graduated from Eastman's Business College, of Poughkeepsie. N. Y. At the outbreak of the civil war Mr. Stipp enlisted, April, I 1861 in Captain Carr's company, Illinois Volunteer infantry, at Sandwith. Ill. These were the first troops to pass airy Chicago for the front. He first enlisted for three months, later re-enlisted for three years and finally re-enlisted for the duration of the war, all in the same regiment. He served in campaigns in the west under Sherman and Grant. was slightly wounded at Aversboro, Ga., and was appointed ordinance sergeant of his regiment in the Atlanta campaign.

Mr .Stipp came to State Center after the close of the war. He was married twice, his first wife being Harriet E. Culver. of this county, whom he married Dec. 8, 1869. One son was born to them, Harley H. Stipp, now a prominent attorney of Des Moines. His second marriage was to Clara E. Hollenbeck, also of this county. May 27. 1884. Three children were born of this marriage, two of whom, a boy and girl, died in infancy. The other, W. Leland Stipp, is now a salesman living in Dubuque. Both sons were here when their father died.

Mrs. Stipp died Feb, 13. 1922, at Oskaloosa. where she had gone for treatment for arterial sclerosis.

December 8, 1869 he married Harriet E. Vulver and they were the parents of one son, Harley H. Stipp. On May 27, 1884 he married a second time- to Clara E Hollenbeck. They were the parents of Elsie May, Goldwin and W. Leland Stipp.

WILLIAM H. STIPP
was married twice. His second marriage was to Clara E. Hollenbeck, of Marshall county, May 27, 1884, and to this union one son has been born, W. Leland Stipp, who is managing the Hotel Cecil at Moosejaw, Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Stipp are attendants of the Presbyterian church, of which Mrs. Stipp is a member.

Stipp, W. H., grain, coal and seeds, also proprietor of Stipp's Hotel, State Centre; born June 15, 1842 in Waynesville, Illinois; in April1866 came to State Centre; first engaged as bookkeeper for Carpenter Bros. & Co.; in 1869 commenced his present business. Married H E Culver December 8, 1869; she was born November 27, 1846 in Kendall County, Illinois; have one child- Harley H. born February 25, 1872. Enlisted April 1, 1861 in Co. C, 10th Ill. V.I. and served to the close of the war.
