LISCOMB MAN DIES ALONE AT HOTEL

END COMES SUDDENLY TO GEORGE GIFFORD, AT STATE CENTER, EARLY TODAY

CORONER CALLED INTO CASE TO INVESTIGATE

Gifford Had Been Working at State Center For Past Three Years -- Complained of Heart Bothering Him Tuesday, and When People in Hotel Hear Noise Find Him Dead on Floor.

Death came suddenly shortly after midnight Tuesday to George Gifford, of Liscomb, who died alone in his room in the Arcade Hotel at State Center. Gifford has complained Tuesday of a pain over his heart, and of palpitation of the heart. When roomers in the hotel heard a cry, and a noise as if some one had fallen, they rushed to Gifford's room, to find him dead on the floor, beside his bed. Gifford was a tinner and until about six months ago, had worked for J. L. McMahon, a State Center hardware merchant. Since he left Mr. McMahon's employ he had been employed about the hotel by Mrs. Campbell, the landlady. FAMILY IS WELL KNOWN George Gifford was 28 years old, and was a member of a well-known Liscomb family. He was the son of James Gifford, who died several years ago. His mother is still living at Liscomb, and there also survive six brothers and one sister. The latter is Mrs. John Crockett, of Washington, D.C., wife of the reading clerk of the United State senate, and formerly clerk of the Iowa supreme court. The brothers are Milroy, Charles, Henry, Fred, Percy, and Pippo Gifford. All live at Liscomb with the exception of Charles. Mr. Gifford is also survived by a wife, with whom, however, he has not been living for about a year. Mrs. Gifford was formerly Miss Tib Luther and the last known of her at State Center was when she was at Cedar Rapids about a month ago. Mrs. Gifford's mother, Mrs. Luther, lives at Peterson, Clay county, and has been notified. CORONER CALLED IN CASE Because of the suddenness of Gifford's death, and the fact that he was found dead, Dr. P. W. Coe, who was called when Gifford was found, informed Coroner F. H. Boucher of the case. The coroner, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Brett, went to State Center this afternoon. Gifford's body was taken to the Brimhall undertaking parlor, where it was prepared for burial. Milroy Gifford, of Liscomb, will take charge of the body this evening, but the arrangements for the funeral will not be made until word is received from Mrs. Crockett at Washington.
