“LEW” JONES DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

OVER NINE YEARS CONFINED TO HOUSE, EX-MAYOR ANSWERS FINAL SUMMONS

Served as Mayor From 1901 to 1905, and Preceding Election was City Marshal and Member of Police Force - Private Funeral to Be Held From Residence Saturday Morning

After having been confined to his home for over nine years and after having suffered from illness that began twelve years ago, Ex-Mayor L. B. Jones died at 5:35 Wednesday evening at his home, 108 North Seventh street. Mr. Jones’ death brought to an end one of the saddest cases of illness known locally. Cut down in his prime by an ailment that baffled all medical skills. Mr. Jones has seen nothing but death before him for all these years. Thruout all, however, he was cheerful and patient, always glad to welcome his friends who called. His wife has borne up under the long strain with remarkable courage, altho she has realized for years that the long vigil could end in no other way than death. PARALYSIS FINALLY RESULTS Mr. Jones’ malady, which affected his locomotion, began during his first term in office, 1901-3. After he had been re-elected his condition became such that he had to be conveyed back and forth between his house and office in a carriage. For nine years he has been confined to the house all the time. Four years ago last September, while trying to help himself out of bed, he fell and broke a leg. For the past two years he has been almost wholly paralyzed, being able to move only his head. About a month ago septic cystitis resulted, and since that time the patient has been failing rapidly. This was the direct cause of death. The chronic trouble that caused Mr. Jones illness has been diagnosed as multiple sclerosis, a hardening of the cords of the spine. NATIVE OF ILLINOIS Lewis Butler Jones was a native of Byron, Ogle county, Illinois where he was born Jan. 26, 1865. When their son was 2 years old, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Jones, the parents, moved to Worth county and in 1870 went to Greenfield, Mass. The Joneses lived there until 1879, when they came back to Illinois, and settled at Rochelle. In 1881 they came west and settled on a farm near Green Mountain. In 1883 the family moved to this city. SERVES TWO TERMS AS MAYOR For two years after coming to Marshalltown “Lew” Jones attended school and in 1885 entered the employ of Wilbur, Densel & Glick, where he remained for eighteen months. He then went to work for D. C. Wilbur, learned the undertaking business, and was with Mr. Wilbur until 1895. In the fall of 1895 Mr. Jones was appointed by Mayor F. G. Pierce as a member of the city police force, and served until 1898, when he was made city marshall. In 1901 Mr. Jones was elected mayor, and was re-elected in 1903. Surviving Mr. Jones are his wife and one son, Francis, the latter 11 years old. Mrs. Jones, prior to her marriage on June 26, 1890, was Miss Louise B. McDowell, of Ames. John A. Jones, Mr. Jones’ father; a sister, Miss Martha Jones, and a brother, Charles Jones, all live in this city. Mrs. J. A. Jones died a year ago last December. Mr. Jones was a member of five fraternal organizations of the city, Banner lodge, I.O.O.F., the Modern Woodmen of American, Maccabees, Red Men and Elks. PRIVATE FUNERAL SATURDAY Private funeral services will be held from the Jones home at 10:30 Saturday morning, in charge of Rev. C. E. Pilgrim. Burial will be in Riverside. The Jones home will be open to friends from 12:30 to 3 o’clock Friday afternoon.
