MISS BUCHANAN, LONGTIME CITY TEACHER, DIES

Miss Freda Buchanan, 51, of 111 N. 2nd Ave., a teacher at Woodbury school, died at Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon where she had been a patient for the last two weeks. She had been in failing health for the last month. Born Oct. 30, 1909, at Leavenworth, Kan., she was the daughter of Joseph and Bess Stevenson Buchanan. When she was young the family moved to Des Moines. UPON HER graduation from Drake University, Miss Buchanan taught school at Jordan and had been a member of the Marshalltown Public School System since 1937, having taught kindergarten at Glick, Abbott and Woodbury Schools. Miss Buchanan was a member of Central Christian Church, Ruth Heimer Circle, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, University Women, and the Marshalltown Education Association. Preceding her in death were her parents. SURVIVING are four brothers, Edward and William Buchanan, both of Des Moines, Wilbur of Joliet, Ill., and Russell of Gary, Ind. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Services will be from the chapel of Estel-Perrin Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Friday in charge of the Rev. Richard Walters, pastor of Central Christian Church. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines at 2 p.m. Friday.
