DR. HERMENCE, PHYSICIAN HERE 31 YEARS, DIES

Fails to Recover From Stroke Suffered at his Home April 13

Dr. G. E. Hermence, 54, practicing physician and surgeon in Marshalltown for 31 years, died at 7:45 Sunday night at St. Thomas Mercy hospital where he had been a patient since suffering a stroke April 13 at his home, 911 West Church street. He failed to regain consciousness completely after being stricken and the immediate cause of his death was a cerebral hemorrhage. A veteran of the army medical corps of the first world war, Dr. Hermence was the sixth commander of Frank Lewis Glick post, American Legion, and the first of 6 men who have headed that post to die. He served in 1924. He was also chairman of the Marshall county chapter of the Red Cross for 13 years from 1920 to 1933 and was prominent in the state and county medical societies. BORN NEAR CONRAD George Earl Hermence was born near Conrad May 10, 1888, the son of George and Kate Hermence. He lived on a farm until his graduation from Conrad high school and then his parents moved into that town. He attended Cornell college at Mt. Vernon for one year and was graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1912. He came to Marshalltown 31 years ago and had practiced here since that time with the exception of his service in the army. He was commissioned a first lieutenant in the medical corps at Fort Des Moines Dec. 5, 1917, and was called to active duty March 2, 1918. He was stationed at Camp Cody, N.M., where he was in command of the old base hospital, and was mustered out at Fort Riley, Kan., May 27, 1919, returning to this city to resume his practice. He married Bernice Bowles May 20, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pa., and his widow and adopted daughter, Mary Jane Hermence survive. RAILROAD SURGEON For 28 years Dr. Hermence served as local surgeon for the Chicago Great Western railroad. He was a member of the Marshall County, Iowa and American Medical societies, a member of the First Methodist church, the Elks lodge and the American Legion. Dr. Hermence was also widely known as a sportsman and was widely traveled, making a trip to Europe in 1938. The body is at the Pursel funeral home. Services will be held at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church and burial will be in Riverside.
