FERGUSON MAN, OLIVER SPEAS, DIES AT 74

Oliver V. Speas, 74, who lived in Marshall County all of his life except for eight years in Oklahoma, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday at his home just northwest of Ferguson. Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Christian-Congregational Church in Ferguson with burial in Timber Creek Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Frederick Cooper, Grinnell, will be assisted by the Rev. L. A. Davison, Ferguson. Mr. Speas, a son of Nathaniel and Mary Hilsabeck Speas, was born in the county April 7, 1880. He was married Jan. 15, 1902, to Nellie Crouse, who died in 1934. On March 22, 1936, he married Freda Butler. Surviving are the widow; two sons, Rodney R., Fairfield, and Oliver V. Jr., LeGrand; four daughters, Mrs. Arthur Keese and Mrs. Ralph Richardson, Gilman; Mrs. Glenn Kelly, Melbourne, and Mrs. Edward Austin, Marshalltown, and a stepdaughter who is also his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rodney Speas. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs. Mollie Powers, Salem, Ore.; three brothers, James of Liscomb, William and Charles of LeGrand; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Avey Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Wednesday.
