Mrs. Barbara Wittel, 311 May St., one of Marshalltown's oldest residents, died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday at Evangelical Hospital where she had been a patient 3 days. She had been in poor health for more than a year. Mrs. Wittel was born in Germany Sept. 10, 1853, and celebrated her 101st birthday anniversary last year. She came to Marshalltown 83 years ago with her parents, Jacob and Sabilla Manis Ruopp. On March 18, 1878, she was married to Jacob Wittel, who preceded her in death in 1935. She was the mother of four sons and a daughter, only one of whom, Charles, survives and with whom she made her home. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Mrs. Harold Wright and Charles Wittel Jr., both of Newton, four great grandchildren and three great great grandchldren. Mrs. Wittel was a member of Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church, the Ladies Aid Society and was a charter member of Concordia Rebekah Lodge No. 295. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Avey's with the Rev. John Mohr in charge. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
