JOHN S. BRANDON, 77, DIES AT DEACONESS

John S. Brandon, 77, of 108 1/2 South Center street who became a Marshalltown merchant after losing his legs in a railroad accident on the old Iowa Central years ago, died at 1:40 Sunday afternoon at the Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient for a week. Death was due to heart complications. After the accident which deprived him of the use of his legs, he went into the grocery and shoe business on South Third avenue, where he was located for a number of years. Later he was in business in a grocery store with John Coleman on West Main street. He also traveled for an artificial limb company for a number of years. Mr. Brandon was born Nov. 8, 1863, in St. Louis, Ill., the son of Aaron and Sarah Brandon. He married Miss Clara Mitten in Bellflower, Ill., Dec. 24, 1884. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Marshalltown, where they made their home for many years. They lived in California for a few years and a short time in Minneapolis, Minn., and Kansas City, Mo., and were with his daughter, who then lived near Melbourne. Mrs. Brandon died in 1932. Also preceding him in death were two children, one died in infancy and Mrs. Pearl Norby died in 1931. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Henry Krough, 5 1/2 miles west of Gladbrook. Mr. Brandon was married a second time to Mrs. Jane Gamber, in Hannibal, Mo., Sept. 29, 1932. He is survived by his widow and five stepchildren: Mrs. Jack Sullivan of Johnson City, Tenn., Mrs. Marth Hatcher and Roy Gamber of Peoria, Ill., David Gamber of St. Louis, Mo., and Harl Gamber who lives at home. He is also survived by two brothers, W. W. Brandon of Bellflower, Ill., and Cole Brandon of Bellingham, Wash., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Conkling of this city. There are four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Pursel funeral home, Wednesday at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Ross Mills of Green Mountain. Burial will be in the Maple Grove cemetery near Melbourne.
