Dr. E. M. Mills, 83, of LeGrand, Marshall county's oldest practicing physician, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. R. Grimes, 4 1/2 miles northeast of Marshalltown at 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Myocarditis was the immediate cause of death. Dr. Mills had conducted general medical practice in LeGrand since 1900 when he came to that town from Illinois, attracted by the fact that a brother, J. D. Mills, was operating a cheese factory there at the time. During the more than 45 years he practiced in that community, he estimated that he delivered an average of 100 babies a year, many of them in later years the children of parents at whose birth he had officiated. At the time of his death he had been a member of the A.M.A. for 55 years. Ernest Manning Mills was born Jan. 3, 1863, the son of Manning and Ursala Mills in Washington county, Iowa, near the town of Washington. He grew to manhood in southern Iowa and Illinois, graduating from high school in Streator, Ill., and was graduated from the University of Illinois with the class of 1890. Dr. Mills practiced in Kansas City, Kan., and Payson, Ill., prior to coming to LeGrand. In 1892 he married Anna Burgess at Streator, Ill., and she died in LeGrand, March 18, 1939. To this union ten children were born, two of whom preceded him in death, a daughter in infancy and Ernest, who was killed in action in Germany April 21, 1945. MANY SURVIVORS Surviving are four sons, Dr. Max M. Mills of Marshalltown, Glenn E. of LeGrand, Ralph R. of Adel and Dr. Harlow B. Mills of Bozeman, Mont.; four daughters, Mrs. L. E. Johnson of LeGrand, Mrs. L. R. Grimes of Marshalltown, Mrs. C. R. Durland of Reading, Pa., and Mrs. A. Vandervelde of Emmetsburg; one sister, Mrs. Effie Adamson of Streator, Ill., and 22 grandchildren. His parents died when he was very young, and three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death besides his wife and two children. Dr. Mills was a member of the Marshall County Medical society, Polar Star lodge No. 113 A.F. & A.M. of LeGrand and an active member of the Friends church at LeGrand where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in charge of Rev. Taylor Guthrie. Burial will be in the family lot in the Friends cemetery, west of LeGrand. The body will remain at the Estel funeral home here until 11 Tuesday morning.
