James Edward McCann, 86, passed away at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on Sunday, December 15, 2013.

James was born February 20, 1927 in Creston, Iowa to James and Thelma (Bierce) McCann. He was a Des Moines area resident for most of his life and worked as a laborer for Monarch Construction for many years until his retirement in 1993. James proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. James was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage. He was a simple man who took pleasure in the little things in life.

James is survived by his children: Albert (Cathy) McCann, Roxane McCann, and Bart McCann, Sr.; sister, Josephine Kesterke; grandchildren: Christina, Ambyre, Bart Jr., Jason, David, Victoria, Eric, Nicole and Stephanie; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Stoppkotte) McCann, his parents, and his sisters: Mary, Alice and Margaret.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines with visitation for an hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial will occur at Sunset Memorial Gardens following the services.
