CATHERINE JANE REIS

Catherine Jane Reis of Twin Falls, Idaho died at University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at the age of 63 after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Jane was born on March 10, 1950 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the second of five children of Dr. Harold E. and Lois V. Sauer. Her surviving siblings are Dick Sauer, of Loomis, California; Barb Sauer, of Walnut Creek, California; Lori Sauer, of Beechingstoke, England and Scott Sauer of Madison, Wisconsin.

Jane married Bernard Jay "Bernie" Reis in 1973 and they set up home in Filer where their 3 children were born. They are: Jay Reis (born 1976) of Filer, Idaho; Erin Reis (born 1979) of Santa Cruz, California and Jody Reis (born 1981) of Long Beach, California. After a divorce in 1991 she moved with her children to a small acreage in Twin Falls.

Jane attended Marshalltown High School, graduating in 1968, and later received a BA in Psychology, Elementary Education and Special Education at the University of Iowa in 1972. After earning her degree, she moved to Filer, Idaho and began her career in the local education system, initially teaching Special Education. Jane later received an MA in counseling from the College of Idaho. Jane taught Special Education at Twin Falls High School during the 1991-1992 school year, and from 1992 until her retirement in 2010 she worked as a counselor at Magic Valley Alternative High School. Additionally, she had a small private practice as a therapist. Jane's choice of career was influenced by her love and devotion to children.

When her children were born they became her raison d'etre and she dedicated herself to their upbringing. They in turn gave Jane four grandsons who filled her life with unimaginable joy and many days of pleasure. The oldest two are Jay's sons, Carson, 7 and Dayton, 5. Erin is mother to Deklyn, 3, and Jody recently gave birth to Magnus, aged 5 months.

Jane arrived in Idaho with an American Saddlebred named Gwen and a beagle named Emily. She began to breed and raise Appaloosas who became her second family. From horseback she grew to know and love her adopted state of Idaho. Back roads were her favorite and she had many exciting adventures discovering hidden gems and out of the way places. She often traveled to the Hawaiian Islands, a place that had a special place in her heart, to hike, snorkel and scuba dive. More far-flung journeys led her to various European countries including England, France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia which left her with a deep feeling of gratitude to have had such wonderful experiences.

Jane was a steadfast and supportive friend, known for her no nonsense approach to life and biting sense of humor. She was admired and respected by her colleagues, friends and students and loved by those closest to her. Her family was her bedrock and she was theirs. Everyone who knew her will feel her absence and be enriched by having known her.

A celebration of Jane's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013 at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, 2466 Addison Ave. East, Twin Falls. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park. At Jane's request there will be no public viewing. Services are under the direction of Trent Stimpson and staff at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, Twin Falls.
