Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday January 17, 2006 at Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell
Interment: following funeral service January 17, 2006 at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman, Iowa

Mary E. Barker, 60, of Gilman, died Friday, January 12, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Del Dawes of Grinnell officiating. Organist will be Kathleen McCune. Pallbearers will be Chad Barker, Jeff Duncan, Kim Hulin, Mark Kingery, Steve Millang, and Mike Strawn. Honorary bearers will be Bill Ashing, Rick Barker, Richard Coppock, and Wavern McDowell. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Gilman First Responders. The daughter of Vursel and Cecil Messer Parmley, she was born May 14, 1945, in Grinnell. She later moved to Gilman in 1953 and was a 1963 graduate of Gilman High School. She lived most of her life in Gilman and was employed at Citizens Savings Bank in Gilman until the mid-1980’s and then in the accounting department at Partner Communications Co-op in Gilman. Mary held a passion for music. She was an accomplished pianist and for many years she enjoyed playing the organ on Sundays at the Gillman U.C.C. She enjoyed arts and crafts, particularly crocheting and drawing. She was an avid reader, enjoyed being in the outdoors tending to her gardens, and she loved her cats. She was a huge fan of Elvis and the Minnesota Vikings. She held an awesome sense of humor. Survivors include two children, Paulette Millang of Ames and Chad Barker of Reno, Nevada; one sister, Linda Parmley of Gilman; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jack and Tom Parmley.
